In 1899, Joseph Nelson Ross discovered wild plants near Gwadzra Lake. Léon Diguet collected specimens based on specimens grown in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. This species was named by Alvin Berger in honor of Maurice de Villemorin in 1913. And it is also popular with octopus agave.
